Why Do My Clothes Smell Like Weed?

Without going into great detail, cannabis has terpenes. These terpenes are released from dried cannabis when it burns. It is the terpenes that give the well-known smell of weed.

These tiny molecules in cannabis smoke can attach to almost anything and everything. Almost all

  • Fibers

  • Fabric

  • Textiles

  • Furniture

  • Surfaces

  • Carpets

  • Clothes

I will cover the last one in particular in this guide.

Making the process more manageable from the start

Natural fibers are always better for not smelling. This doesn't just cover the marijuana smell but also sweat, food, dust, and almost all other smells. Synthetic fabrics or fibers allow a much deeper connection with the terpenes, and the odors may be present even after a couple of washes.

Psst... if you smoke wearing no fibers or fabrics at all, the fibers or fabrics won't smell.

Also, if it's an option to smoke weed outside, the weed smoke will have a much easier time just flying out into nowhere instead of lingering in your room and attaching to everything. Fresh air is also kick ass for your lungs after a smoke sesh.

Another smart move to consider to prevent weed smell is to have smoking clothes. A set of clothes you only wear for smoking. This might be too much work. But it will work nonetheless.

Smoking indoors is never recommended for not smelling like weed.

Regular Machine Wash Using Laundry Detergent

Get rid of the weed smell by simply washing your clothes like always. You don't necessarily need to do a more intricate method than this if it only slightly smells.

Natural fabrics tend to smell like laundry detergent after a wash. If you have the time, try this method before doing anything fancy. It might work very nicely.

Step one: Put all clothes with a weed smell into the washing machine.

Step two: Open the detergent area and use a reasonable amount of detergent. A pod-based detergent can also be used, but put this in with the clothes.

Step three: Hang clothes to try in the sun (optionally put them in a dryer)

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. If this doesn't work, try one of the options below.

Cannabolish

The number one solution for getting rid of weed smell is Cannabolish.

Cannabolish is manufactured specifically for removing marijuana odors. They don't stain, have no strong chemicals, no synthetic perfumes, or other dangerous substances.
Cannabolish, essential oil, essential oils, natural fabrics

The reasoning behind this being my preferred way is that it is easy and fast. Pick up bottle, spray, spray more, and done. No hassle at all.

They also advertise as safe for pets and humans alike. You can spray them on just about anything, clothes, cars, furniture. You can spray anything that smells of weed with no worries.

Cannabolish also provides odor-removing candles in lavender and wintergreen! Perfect for smoking inside or removing weed smells inside.

Sunlight and Fresh Air

This is the solution I went for when I was younger. After going to my cabin with friends, we all stressed out about our clothes smelling like weed. So on the last day of the trip, we would hang out almost all our clothes and just wait it out.

To do this, hang your clothes outside, in a place with airflow. Medium heat can excellently remove cannabis odor. High heat makes it stick more. If you live in an area with very high heat, consider another solution.

Air will assist in blowing the smell away. Literally blowing the weed smell away, eliminating the unwanted odors.

White Vinegar Wash

This is a 4 step process...

Step 1: Wash them like you always do.

Don't start out using white vinegar. Start out using regular laundry detergent. If it's an option, choose one that advertises cleaning and smell removal. Zero Odor is my recommendation. They advertise for sweaty clothes but work perfectly for OG Stank clothes.

Step 2: White vinegar

Add white vinegar to the rinse cycle compartment if using a washing machine. This way, it's automatically added after the detergents. If washing by hand, steps one and two get mixed up. First, soak your clothes in vinegar, then wash them with regular detergent.

Step 3: Optional

If it still has an unwanted odor, repeat steps one and two.

Step 4: Let it dry out.

Although you can do this in a dryer machine, I recommend the sun and fresh air. Scroll up to find out why if you didn't already read that part.

Baking Soda Wash

This is a 3-step process...

Step 1: Soak clothes in water and baking soda

My only remark about this step is using reasonably hot water and leaving it for 20 minutes: no more and no less. My go-to measurement is one cup of baking soda per 3 gallons of water.

Step 2: Wash clothes in the washing machine

Just like normal, after the 20 minutes are up. Throw the clothes into the washing machine and wash them using laundry detergents. Again, I recommend Zero Odor. Alternatives are detergents with a natural odor of lemon, lavender, or something else. These also work quite well.

Step 3: Let it dry out.

Although you can do this in a dryer machine, I recommend the sun and fresh air. Scroll up to find out why if you didn't already read that part.

Bleach Wash

This is the best and most dangerous way to remove overpowered and unwanted smells. The smell of weed will no longer exist if this is done correctly. This is by far the most effective method of getting rid of the smoke smell or any smell.

There exists both standard bleach and color-safe bleach.

Step 1: Mix bleach and water

mix your bleach and water to the recommended ratio in a large bucket. Read the bleach packet. I recommend cold water as hot water can react more with bleach. Hot water will work better, but for safety, I recommend cold. Use waterproof gloves when handling bleach water.

Step 2: Soak your clothes

Place your clothes into the bucket with bleach mix and let them sit for 10 minutes. Before doing this, please read the labels on your clothes to make sure they can handle bleach. Remember, there are plenty of other ways to get rid of the weed smell.

If you're super worried about ruining your clothes, I don't recommend bleach, as it only sometimes works the way you intended.

Step 3: Rinse and repeat.

Rinse in cold water first, then warm water. If your clothing still smells like marijuana smoke, repeat. If not, dry them outside in the sun.

The Best Excuses For Why Your Clothes Smell Like Weed.

If someone ever asks why your clothes smell like weed and you don't want to tell that specific person that it is because you smoked pot wearing them. Here are some suggestions as to what you can say. And what you shouldn't say.

Nr 1: I was hanging out with people who smoked weed indoors or outdoors.

This puts almost all stress away from you. Of course, the person or people you're telling still might wonder and dislike that you are hanging out with people who smoke pot, cannabis users, but you're in the clear. Although you might be under suspicion, just saying.

Nr 2: Say you were out clubbing and or at a party.

Marijuana smoke and weed smell are not uncommon at parties or the club. I feel like everyone knows this. The smoke just happened to be at the same place you were, but you did not partake or hype up said weed smell.

Nr 3: Say you lent out your clothes or that you are borrowing the article in question.

It's that simple. If the person questioning you knows you own it, say you lent it out. If they wouldn't know, either way, say you're borrowing it. Be careful, as this one may get you in trouble down the line, but it works once or twice.

OBS! If you regularly smoke, and the person knows it. Be honest. Honesty often goes a long way. If you're wondering how to tell your parents you smoke. Check out this guide.

Summary

Your clothes smell like marijuana smoke because of the terpenes. They stick to your clothing and almost all other fabrics.

To make it easier for yourself, have smoking clothes and smoke outside. Don't have your smoking session indoors, as the smoke won't escape as easily.

The number one solution for getting rid of weed smell is Cannabolish. These are the most straightforward and least time-consuming options and have saved me a lot. It is nothing less than a bonus that it smells nice as well.

Sunlight and fresh air work wonders, but they might only work on some clothing.

White vinegar, baking soda, and bleach washes are excellent for really deep cleaning clothes and work on other garments as well. I mean clothing that smells or has stains that are not marijuana-related.

Good Luck!

As always, good luck on your mission to get rid of the weed smell. I hope my guide on how to get rid of weed smell on clothes quickly works wonders for you as it has for me.
